Packaging is an inseparable and a vital part of today’s pharmaceuticals market. Plastic bottles used for pharma packaging are made of a special plastic, known as polyethylene terephthalate or PET - a clear, strong and lightweight plastic belonging to the polyester family. Hence, PET quality testing have a great importance in the pharma industry.

PET quality testing have a great importance in the pharma industry.

PET, one of the most popular types of plastics, gained importance in the past few decades and is been widely used in the healthcare industry due to its safety and quality standards. It is generally used for packaging of liquid oral drug formulations and is the most used and globally accepted form of plastic utilized in packaging for pediatric and geriatric drugs.
PET, which is used in medical applications adheres to rigid quality and safety standards and is tested for being non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, biocompatible and in no way injurious to the biological environment. The safety of PET packaging is established further by understanding its manufacturing process. Few important tests which must be conducted at manufacturing level are vacuum leak test, wall thickness measurement, top load testing, etc.

Vacuum Leak testing is a primary testing process for ensuring that the PET bottle’s seal is leak proof and no external contamination can enter and react with the pharmaceutical chemicals.

Vacuum leak tester strictly adheres to international standard test methods. The chief motive to perform the test is to ensure that the seal of components associated with vacuum sources is not damaged.

In the test, the sample bottle is inverted and placed in the testing chamber. The negative pressure and the test time is set as per the requirement and initiate the test. After commencement of the test, even minute leakage can be checked from the blotting paper which is kept on the base.
