Testing moisture content in powder form substances can be sometimes challenging for a manufacturer or lab engineers. As compared to solid form, which holds a stable shape and can be cut into a standard testing size prior moisture analysis, powder material can be a thing of worry.

Cement, which is a hygroscopic material is used in construction and pose a good example of how excess moisture content can transform a bag to a block if it is kept open for a period of time.  Cement quickly absorbs moisture from the surrounding atmosphere. To maintain the ideal moisture content for cement, which is 0.8%, it must be tested on a regular basis.

Steps to follow for the moisture analysis of cement powder:

  1. 8 – 12 grams of cement (this quantity can vary as per the testing standard) can be taken on a clean sample plate post conducting the tare function to cancel out the weight of the sample plate.
  2. Set the moisture analyser temperature to 138˚C (280˚F) and timer for 5 minutes (the temperature and time can vary as per the testing standard).
  3. Very carefully place the sample plate inside the halogen chamber, close the lid and start the process. 
  4. The equipped halogen lamps reduce the moisture until the pre-set drying time is reached. 
  5. The moisture analyser then calculates and displays the sample’s moisture content on the screen.
