Testing moisture content in powder form substances can be sometimes challenging for a manufacturer or lab engineers. As compared to solid form, which holds a stable shape and can be cut into a standard testing size prior moisture analysis, powder material can be a thing of worry.

The moisture content of any product can relate to the product’s quality, shelf life and depict other considerations. The ideal moisture content is determined by the regulatory authorities. Compliance with the ideal requirements can be matched when a proficient moisture analyser is equipped in the plant for regular testing as batches are prepared for packaging.

Moisture Analysis in Powder

Let’s take ‘Cement’ as an example for testing moisture content in powder form. Cement, which is a hygroscopic material is used in construction and pose a good example of how excess moisture content can transform a bag to a block if it is kept open for a period of time.  Cement quickly absorbs moisture from the surrounding atmosphere. To maintain the ideal moisture content for cement, which is 0.8%, it must be tested on a regular basis.

Moisture analysers such as the digital model offered by Labtiger works on the thermogravimetric principle utilizing halogen heaters along with analytical balance to precisely determine the percentage of moisture in a sample during a programmed testing cycle. The sample is weighed prior moisture analysis begins, and after the cycle is completed. The loss in weight is your moisture content.

Steps to follow for the moisture analysis of cement powder:

  1. 8 – 12 grams of cement (this quantity can vary as per the testing standard) can be taken on a clean sample plate post conducting the tare function to cancel out the weight of the sample plate.
  2. Set the moisture analyser temperature to 138˚C (280˚F) and timer for 5 minutes (the temperature and time can vary as per the testing standard).
  3. Very carefully place the sample plate inside the halogen chamber, close the lid and start the process.
  4. The equipped halogen lamps reduce the moisture until the pre-set drying time is reached.
  5. The moisture analyser then calculates and displays the sample’s moisture content on the screen.

Moisture content is a major quality control issue faced across a wide range of laboratory and production operations. Moisture analysis must be a part of an organization’s standard operating procedures.  A compact moisture analyser is a valuable tool for any organization requiring moisture detection.
