How to improve MFI test results?

The melt flow index (MFI), judge the melt flow properties of a specimen at a particular pressure and temperature. Melt flow Indexer, is used to get the MFI of pure, compounded, and post-processed thermoplastic specimen.

The MFI test is used widely among various sectors of plastic industry. Suppliers look for MFI value as a QC check to detect and analyse the modifications in their polymerization or compounding processes. As part of their inspection process, some use the test to decide the amount of recycled material which can be used in their product while still maintaining end-product specifications. The difficulty comes when two labs come up with different results, making it impossible to determine whether a material meets the required MFI specification or not. Get your standards right

No matter what method you choose, it is very common for two organizations to test the same sample and have different test results. Multiple factors affect the precision and accuracy of a test. Is the melt index tester is in good working condition? Has the machine been calibrated by a certified metrologist? Is the testing instrument clean? Are the operators properly trained and are using the same testing procedure?

There are two major MFI test standards:

  • ASTM D1238: Standard Test Method for Melt Flow Rates of Thermoplastics by Extrusion Plastometer
  • ISO1133: Determination of the Melt Mass-Flow Rate (MFR) and Melt Volume-Flow Rate (MVR) of Thermoplastics.

Both tests the same property, but even a slight process and instrument differences can result into different outcome. As per the theory, both methods, if performed correctly, will give identical test results.

The chances of acquiring precise and accurate test results can be greatly improved by strictly following proper testing procedures and requirements and by periodic testing of materials.
