Plastic Deterioration Detection

When plastic material is in its natural form, it gives a yellow or straw colour. To make the appearance clear, a blue tone is added to the plastic. The green and red portions of the spectrum absorbed makes the plastic looks water clear. Sections having a blue-grey appearance are thicker compared to other parts of the plastic material. The same type of yellowness is obtained when a plastic is decayed or degraded. This can be obtained during processing or from long-term exposure to heat or destroying radiation from ultraviolet or shorter wavelength. As it is very common for plastics to get exposed to such damaging components and loose its clear appearance, a standard test method for yellowness detection was designed for manufacturing transparent, nearly white, translucent, and opaque plastics. The testing standard for the same is ASTM D1925.

Yellowness is described as the divergence in chroma from whiteness or water whiteness in the dominant wavelength range of 570 to 580 nm. The testing process is conducted using a precise spectrophotometer. A positive modification determines a rising yellowness, and a negative modification determines reducing yellowness or rising blueness.
