Almost every industry performs tensile testing in one way or the other. This test tells a lot about the behaviour of the material when it is exposed to the tension from the external sources. This has now become the most significant test in different industries and widely incorporated in testing the strength and durability of the materials in severe working conditions. In this test, an outward pull is applied on the sample until necking appears or sample gets fractured. This test is preferred by the quality managers to approve the quality of the raw materials and passing or failing the end product before rolling out in the market. Tensile testing equipment helps a lot in assessing the suitability of the material in intended working conditions.

 

Test Procedure

The basic principle of the tensile test is to apply the outward pull until it ruptures. This is certainly not possible without using a high-end machine that can work according to the testing standards of relative authorities. To determine the behaviour of the material, a dumbbell-shaped sample is prepared. This sample is subjected to the axial stretching load. The test is performed in a controlled manner and some time with pre-treatment of the sample. The tensile properties of some materials change with the change in temperature of surroundings. The testing reveals about the maximum load-bearing capacity of the material before the failure.   

Tensile testing indifferent industries

In rubber industry, this is one of the most popular tests. As rubber changes its properties with change in temperature. When exposed to heat, it elongates more than in its natural form. Similarly, in low temperature, the elongation decreased to an extent and thus fractures fast. Thus, tensile properties of rubber are tested under different temperatures. The universal tensile testing machine gives pretty good results for rubber samples.

In F&B industry, tensile strength testing machines are used to check the seal strength, bonding of labels, pull strength of caps, etc. Food and beverage packings require tensile testing essentially. For different types of testing, usually, the tensile testing machine manufacturers incorporate tad changes to hold the sample aptly.

 

Textile industry used tensile tests to determine the strength of the fabric, strength of snap-on buttons, zippers, tearing strength and much more. However, the way tensile strength is applied is different for every test, but the basic testing principle remains the same.
